Becoming Reading Superheroes: PIE Minigrant

What We Did

Teachers utilized the Max Axiom graphic novels in their science classrooms for remedial purposes for various science units, additional reading for students interested in specific topics, for Milestone review, and pleasure reading in the science classrooms.  Science teachers made an effort to use the novels in class to promote science reading and literacy skills.

Next year, I plan on meeting with all science and ELA teachers during preplanning for a professional development session on how to utilize the novels beyond remedial purposes and pleasure reading.  I have acquired detailed lesson plans, informational pamphlets, and creative teaching uses for the novels she will share with teachers.  By providing an opportunity to meet and discuss potential learning experiences with the graphic novels,I really hope the graphic novels will be used even more during the 2016-2017 school year.  Additionally, the media specialist is looking into purchasing enough of these books to create small groups (an additional 3-5 copies of each book).
